A Step-by-Step Guide to Measuring Your Room for New Carpet and Estimating Costs

Posted by: Emily Cantrill on February 21, 2024

Tips from Poplar Carpets!

Are you thinking about getting new carpet for your home and want to work out your own estimate for costs? We've got you covered with our step-by-step guide!

To start, it's essential to measure your room accurately. This guide to measuring your room for new carpet will provide you with simple and practical steps to help you estimate the cost of your new carpet and ensure a smooth purchasing process. *

Step 1: Sketch the Room

Begin by drawing a sketch of your room on a piece of paper. Include any unique features like doorways, recesses, fireplaces, or alcoves. This sketch will serve as a visual reference throughout the measurement process.

Step 2: Measure the Length

Measure the maximum length of your room, including any additional areas like fireplaces and recesses. It's recommended to take multiple measurements at different points to account for any uneven walls, particularly in older houses. Mark these measurements on your drawing.

Step 3: Measure the Width

Next, measure the maximum width of your room, including any additional areas. Just like with the length, take measurements at multiple points to ensure accuracy. Mark these measurements on your drawing as well.

Step 4: Add Extra Margin

To allow for any installation variation and ensure you have enough carpet, add an additional 10 cm to both the length and width measurements. This margin will account for any uneven edges or adjustments needed during fitting. Update your drawing with these adjusted measurements.

Step 5: Calculate Total Square Metres

Multiply the full-length measurement by the full-width measurement to determine the estimated total square metres of carpet you'll need for your room. This calculation will provide a solid estimate to work with during your purchasing process.

Step 6: Determine Cost Estimate

To calculate an approximate price for your carpet, multiply the carpet price per square metre by the total square metres you require. For example, if the carpet is priced at £25.99 per square metre and you need 8 square metres, the calculation will be £25.99 x 8 = £207.92.

Step 7: Capture Room Details

Once you have your measurements, take several photographs of the room from different angles. These photos will help the flooring experts envision your space, allowing them to provide you with better advice.

*Remember that the estimated carpet price does not include underlay or fitting costs, which can be discussed during your visit and that all measurements will need to be taken by a professional before any purchase.
