Choosing your carpet

Posted by: David Lanni on November 29, 2021

There’s nothing better underfoot than a soft luxurious carpet, but which kind of carpet should you choose? We’re here to help! Whether you’re looking for robust flooring for your hallway, or some luxury in your living room, we’re here to help you make the best decision for your home flooring purchase.

Why choose carpet?

Carpet is warm underfoot, can make a room more cosy, and is great for helping to insulate a room, especially when paired with a good underlay. It can also help against noise and can be easily lifted to reach plumbing or floorboards if required.

How to make the right choice.

We understand that choosing a new carpet can be a big investment and a decision you want to get right. From choosing the right colour or pattern to carpet type and thickness, it can be overwhelming to pick the best one for you.

Here’s our simple guide to help make this decision easier for you:

  1. Which space in your home are you looking to carpet? Is it a bedroom where you’d like some luxury or a high traffic area like a hallway? High-traffic areas will benefit from more robust fabric choices that are stronger and easier to keep clean. If you’re looking for something softer and more luxurious, think about how you want it to feel underfoot. Do you want it to be plush with a nice gloss, something you can sink your toes into, or something thicker and denser that will be flatter and more stable?
  2. What is your budget? If you set your budget from the start, it can help with your final decision and set your limits. Carpet can range from £4.99 per square metre to over £100 per square metre for premium hand-woven carpet, so deciding your limit from the outset will allow you to make an informed decision on the best carpet for you.
  3. What do you want it to look like? Are you looking for a pop of colour or do you want to choose a neutral colour that will work with most interiors and won’t date as your home changes? Patterns and stripes are also a popular choice and can be used to make a statement on stairways and landings. Larger areas may feel overwhelmed with anything too bold.
  4. How big is the space? Are there any awkward alcoves or returns? Small box-shaped rooms can be easily measured for size, but we highly recommend booking an appointment for an expert to come to your home and measure your room, as any mistakes can be costly.
  5. Do you need some expert advice? Visit one of our stores and speak to our highly trained and friendly sales staff. They will help you choose samples to take home and test in the area you are looking to carpet. They will explain carpet pile and its differences, guide you to the right price ranges and materials that you are looking for, all to ensure you make the best and most informed decision.
