What to Do When Your Carpet Starts Showing Wear and Tear

Posted by: Emily Cantrill on February 8, 2024

Tips from Poplar Carpets!

We’d all love our houses to stay looking pristine and like brand new show homes all of the time, and for nothing to ever wear out or start to look tired and old, but real life unfortunately just doesn’t work that way.

Carpets, while offering comfort and beauty to our homes, are not immune to wear and tear over time either.

So, as a homeowner, it's important to know what to do when your carpet starts showing wear and tear. These are some of our expert tips on how to deal with wear and tear on your carpet.

Regular Vacuuming and Maintenance

The first line of defence against wear and tear on your carpet is regular vacuuming and maintenance. Make it a habit to vacuum your carpet at least twice a week to remove dirt, dust, and debris that can contribute to its deterioration. We recommend using a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush or beater bar for optimal results. The second, and one which is impossible, is to never walk on it and to never ... ever ... have children or pets!!

Addressing Stains and Spills

Spills and stains happen, but it's crucial to act on them really quickly to prevent permanent damage to your carpet. At Poplar Carpets we advise blotting the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel, working from the outer edges towards the centre, and avoiding rubbing or scrubbing, which can spread the stain further. For specific stain removal techniques, consult the manufacturer's guidelines or seek professional help.

Repairing Loose or Damaged Fibres

Over time, certain areas of your carpet may develop loose or damaged fibres. To prevent further deterioration, we suggest using a pair of sharp scissors to carefully trim off the damaged fibres. Be cautious not to cut too close to the carpet base to avoid creating a noticeable spot. If the damage is extensive, consider seeking professional assistance for repairs.

Rotating Furniture and Rugs

To minimise wear and tear caused by heavy furniture or area rugs, it's recommended to periodically rotate them. We advise shifting the furniture or rugs every six months to distribute the weight evenly and avoid excessive pressure on specific areas of the carpet. This simple step can significantly extend the life of your carpet.

Professional Cleaning and Maintenance

While regular vacuuming is important, it's also necessary to invest in professional cleaning and maintenance for your carpet. We recommend scheduling a deep clean every 12 to 18 months to remove deeply embedded dirt, allergens, and stains that regular vacuuming may not address. Professional cleaners have the expertise and equipment to revitalise your carpet and keep it looking its best.
